Cumberland County students have the opportunity to build new skills, forge connections and make some money this summer.

The ICON Summer Internship Program allows CCS students ages 16+ to apply and interview to work in paid positions.

This program enables students to apply skills learned in school to real-life work activities through career exploration and exposure to the real workplace, helping them prepare for their future.

Students selected by a business will serve in a paid position for 32 hours a week for four to six weeks in the summer. All positions are in-person.

One of the goals of this program is to expose students to the businesses and job opportunities that are local to them in order to grow our area’s workforce.

Businesses that have participated in the past include PWC and Blue Ridge Power.

“It’s great for businesses because they don’t have to handle payroll. So students aren’t added on to the company’s payroll. Businesses pay a flat fee to IDI Services at the beginning of the internship and then IDI handles all the payroll for the students. They take on all the insurance they take on all the liabilities for that student as well. So businesses don't have to worry about that,” shared Sara Bandurraga, High School to Work Coordinator for Cumberland County Schools.

The deadline for students to apply for an internship is April 22. There will then be two workshops, May 6 and 13, that all applicants attend, and businesses will interview students on May 20.

The rates will be as follows:

Businesses interested in partnering with the ICON Internship Program can submit their information online at: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfdibiaKWkPGGhcYmT-2QzcjTA6dOOj_qYkORroyyBsKrjw5w/viewform

Businesses can apply to host an intern up until May 6. Businesses are also welcome to host more than just one intern.
