South Central Region HBCU/MSI Internship Program accepting applications

A new internship opportunity is now available to healthcare students to help strengthen the workforce in Hoke and Cumberland Counties.
The South-Central Region of Local Public Health Departments’ Historically Black College and University & Minority Serving Institutions Internship Program seeks to provide students with hands-on work experience in the day-to-day operations within local public health departments. The program lasts 8-10 weeks and aims to provide professional mentorship and networking opportunities to students.
Health Director for the Cumberland County Department of Public Health Dr. Jennifer Green shared that this is a new project that they are able to provide through a Regional COVID-19 Public Health Workforce Grant.
There is hope that this program will help to promote young people to become healthcare professionals in Cumberland and Hoke. “We are hoping to build the pipeline into the public health workforce that reflects the diversity of our community. We hope [to] raise awareness among college students about the field of public health, give them practical experience in working in a local health department, and encourage them to consider employment in a local health department,” remarked Dr. Green.
Internships will be available in Fall 2023 and Spring 2024.
Applicants must be enrolled in a college or university and be seeking an internship as part of their degree program. Qualified public health staff in local health departments will be supervising the interns in accordance with the requirements of their college/university, confirmed Dr. Green.
Dr. Green shared some advice to hopeful applicants: “Give us detailed information about your knowledge and skills as it relates to public health. We know that students likely have limited or no work experience in the field. Help us understand how you are going to apply what you’ve learned in [the] classroom to an internship. We’re looking for students that are eager to learn about public health and gain skills in the field. Help us understand what makes you excited about serving the community in the field of public health.”
