Fort Bragg hosts Sunset Liberty March to honor the legacy of liberty before redesignation

Fort Bragg will officially redesignate as Fort Liberty in a ceremony on June 2, and as part of the redesignation, Fort Bragg – soon to be Fort Liberty, will honor those who served and who continue to serve through the Sunset Liberty March, a march that occurs daily at sunset.

The half-mile Sunset Liberty March, located at Honeycutt and Liberty Trail (formerly Bragg Boulevard), will honor the legacy of Liberty built by the many men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice while assigned at this installation. Each day, a volunteer will march along the trail and render honors at the trail’s end, where a monument, currently under construction, will be placed, honoring the sacrifices of our brave heroes.

The first march will take place June 1, the day before the redesignation. There will be an opening ceremony starting at 8 p.m. Following the ceremony, Lt. Gen. Chris Donahue, XVIII Airborne Corps commanding general, will lead the way for the first march at sunset.

Participants in the Sunset Liberty March are volunteers who are military veterans, active-duty, Guard, or Reserve service members, Gold Star family members, or anyone who desires to participate.

On Friday, June 2, Fort Bragg will redesignate to Fort Liberty in a ceremony on the installation. The ceremonial event includes the casing of the Fort Bragg garrison colors, and uncasing of the Fort Liberty colors, signifying the redesignation to Fort Liberty. Lt. Gen. Chris Donahue, XVIII Airborne Corps commanding general will serve as the guest speaker for the event.

Liberty honors the heroism, sacrifices, and values of the Soldiers, Service Members, Civilians, and Families who live and serve with this installation.

“I submit to you that the redesignation ladies and gentlemen is not about changing our name. And not about forgetting who we are. It’s about changing the narrative just a bit to what we’ve always been since 1918, since Camp Bragg and then Fort Bragg and soon to be Fort Liberty we have always, always signed on through the cause of liberty,” shared Garrison Commander John Wilcox.

Signs on the base have begun to be replaced with the new name, and they are ready to begin this new chapter.
