Southern Pines Brewing Company breaks ground on new Carthage location

Southern Pines Brewing Company broke ground on their new site in Carthage, NC last Friday, June 9.

The historic Tyson & Jones Buggy Company building will soon be repurposed into Carthage’s first brewery.

Natalie Hawkins, President of the Moore County Economic Development Partnership, shared some additional information on how Southern Pines Brewing Company became the next tenant of the historic building.

“...Representative Neal Jackson, he’s in the house, a couple–two years ago I think, got an appropriation from the state to provide the Town of Carthage with $600,000 of funding to renovate the building, so the building was owned by the Town of Carthage. And I was working with their manager at the time, their town manager, about what they wanted to see in that building, what their kind of hopes and dreams for it were, and they came to me and said, ‘Well, we really would love to see like a brewery and a restaurant in the building.’ So at that time, Micah Niebauer…he is a member of our Moore County Economic Development Partnership executive committee, and he was talking with me about an expansion that they [Southern Pines Brewing Company] were doing in Fayetteville… and so I approached him and said, ‘Would you have any interest in looking at this building in Carthage? It’s a really cool, architecturally unique structure that’s beautiful right in downtown.’ He said, ‘Yes,’” Hawkins shared.

Following their conversation, Hawkins arranged a tour for Niebauer and he was game for the expansion. Niebauer also ended up acquiring the building that is adjacent to the former Tyson & Jones Buggy Company and this adjacent property is going to be torn down and turned into an event venue.

Carthage is a small community with only around 3000 residents; however, Hawkins shared that the town has seen a lot of growth in recent years.

“…at least in the last two years there’s been a significant interest in that community from residential developers. And what we’re seeing is the growth in Moore County moving north towards Carthage from Pinehurst, Southern Pines and Aberdeen, and they’ve also had a lot of downtown revitalization that has occurred in the last two years. Lots of new unique boutique stores and shops that have come into town. Lots of facade improvements to make downtown look more beautiful. They’ve just constructed a new downtown parking lot, which is, right across the street, really from this historic building. So I think it’s just that Carthage is another great small town in Moore County to live in and it’s seeing a lot of interest from residential developers and businesses,” remarked Hawkins.

This will be Southern Pines Brewing Company’s fourth location. They are also in the process of opening their third location in Downtown Fayetteville.

The hope is that the Carthage location will be up and running by the end of 2023.
