A Harnett County intersection that becomes backed up during the commute associated with Fort Liberty will be improved under a new $2.9 million contract.
The project will add a second left-turn lane on Nursery Road for drivers going south on N.C. Highway 24/87, as well as add a second left-turn lane on the highway for drivers headed onto Nursery Road away from the military installation.
These extra turn lanes, coupled with new traffic islands and an upgraded traffic signal, will improve traffic flow and safety and ease congestion during the peak travel times.
Fort Liberty is a major regional employer, contributing to the congestion on a highway that carries almost 40,000 vehicles a day.
The N.C. Department of Transportation awarded the contract to Fred Smith Co. of Raleigh in July. The contractor can begin next month, and the company will have until the summer of 2024 to complete the improvements.
