Fayetteville City Council receives updates on Parks and Rec projects

Fayetteville City Council Members received an update on park projects currently underway throughout the city earlier this week at their Council Work Session which took place on Aug. 7.

Construction Management & Capital Projects Director Robert Stone presented the Council with a full overview of the bond projects completed over the last year.

Those projects included existing park improvements for Massey Hill Park, Seabrook Park, the Gilmore Therapeutic Recreation Center Splash Pad, the Kiwanis Recreation Center Splash
Pad, Myers Recreation Center Splash Pad, Massey Hill Recreation Center Splash Pad, a Skateboard Park, Jordan Soccer Complex.

Progress continues on Senior Center East which officially broke ground on March 26, 2019, and had a topping out ceremony held in Mind April of this year. See more here.

The next step expected to be held by officials is a ribbon cutting ceremony which is currently being planned for the end of 2023 or early 2024.

“This project is doing really well out there. We're looking at a substantial construction complete at the end of the year, maybe looking at a ribbon cutting in the first of the year. But right now it's moving on very well. No major issues with this one,” shared Stone.

The McArthur Road Sports Complex along U.S. HWY-295 is also continuing along. Stone shared that the design work for the park was recently completed and the estimate for the complete project was set at $19 million. He also shared that in June, the City applied for the Defense Community Investment Program federal grant to fund the project.

The Mazarick Tennis Center expected to be located off of Filter Plant Dr is also officially under construction. Stone shared that the site work is expected to be completed in October of 2023 and the contractor has begun work on the tennis courts after securing the contracts separately from the construction contracts for the rest of the site.

As of now the courts are expected to be completed in January of 2024 but the project did experience a minor delay after the decision was made to change the design of one of the buildings.

“We went back to the drawing board and talked with Muter Construction who was the group that got the building bid, and they thought they could save somewhere between $200,000- $250,000 by going to a pre engineered metal building. So we're at this last piece of doing that redesign on that metal building. We talked with the contractor and once we have that signed going with the pre-engineered metal building, it'd be 270 days, which is what the contractor said about the approximate date. So that puts us a little ways out,” said Stone.
