Gas leak causes road closure; Emergency personnel evacuate civilians out of precaution

By Stephanie Meador, posted Jan 5, 2024 on BizFayetteville.com

On Thursday, Jan. 5, a subcontractor for NCDOT was using an excavator and digging in the median on a section of Bragg Boulevard and hit and damaged the natural gas line.

NCDOT Public Relations Officer Andrew Barksdale spoke with GFBJ to explain the details of the accident.

Police and fire responded to the gas line damage as an emergency situation and evacuated the area as a precaution. Bragg Boulevard was closed in both directions near the intersection with Sycamore Dairy Road to reroute traffic while repairs are being made.

Piedmont Natural Gas Company, who owns the gas line, were called in to repair the damaged 12-inch gas main line. At around noon today, Jan. 5, Fayetteville Fire Dept. reported that the bypass line was in place, and the gas leak had been officially stopped.

Barksdale explained that NCDOT has begun to conduct air monitoring in all the affected buildings and once Piedmont Natural Gas and FFD Hazmat personnel complete this, they will begin to lift the evacuation.

NCDOT will be investigating the reason for the mistake once the emergency is under control.
