A major road serving the campus of Fayetteville State University will close next week to complete repairs.

Crews for the N.C. Department of Transportation need to close both directions of Murchison Road between W.T. Brown Drive and Stadium Drive to finish repairing a sinkhole on the side of the road along the campus, where one lane has been closed for the past few weeks.

The barricades will be installed beginning at 6 a.m. Jan. 30, and the road is expected to reopen by 6 p.m. Feb. 1, weather permitting.

Although people who live around the campus may opt to take a shorter alternative, NCDOT will post detour signs for traffic to follow other four-lane primary routes, such as the MLK Jr. Freeway, Country Club Drive and Ramsey Street, until Murchison Road can be repaired.

Drivers should approach the closure cautiously and be mindful of the longer commute using the detour.
