Cumberland County Schools (CCS) has once again been honored with the prestigious N.C. Purple Star Award Designation, marking the fourth consecutive year the district has received this recognition. One hundred percent of the schools in the district earned the award, reaffirming CCS' unwavering support for military-connected students and their families.

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction's (NCDPI) Purple Star Award is given to schools and districts that demonstrate military-friendly practices and a strong commitment to military-connected students and their families. To qualify, all schools in the district submitted detailed documentation showcasing their efforts and initiatives to support military families.

“Earning the Purple Star Award for the fourth consecutive year showcases our dedication to supporting military-connected students and their families,” said CCS Superintendent Dr. Marvin Connelly Jr.in a press release. “With over 25 percent of our nearly 50,000 students being military-connected, providing the necessary resources and support is crucial for their academic and personal success. This honor reflects our dedication to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for all of our students.”

CCS and the military community of Cumberland County share a close relationship, with military-connected students facing unique challenges such as frequent relocations and parental deployments. The district's initiatives aim to address these challenges by offering tailored support and resources.

The Purple Star Award was established by NCDPI in 2019 to honor schools that go above and beyond in supporting military families. North Carolina, home to a significant number of active duty, guard, reserve, and veteran service members, has a strong tradition of supporting its military community, and this award highlights the efforts of schools and districts in maintaining that tradition.
