The Fayetteville Fire Department will take part in the statewide “Smoke Alarm Saturday” campaign on Saturday, June 1. Smoke Alarm Saturday is a one-day, statewide smoke alarm canvassing event to bring awareness for the need to have working smoke alarms in homes.
A kick-off event will take place Friday, May 31 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Members from the Fayetteville and Fort Liberty Fire Departments along with Office of State Fire Marshal will be in the parking lot of Target located at 20256 Skibo Rd. for a Child Safety Seat installation clinic, a “touch-a-truck” event for children to see emergency vehicles and learn safety tips from firefighters. Other educational material will also be provided.
“Our goal is to educate and provide tools that will contribute to fire prevention and early detection,” said Fayetteville Fire Chief Kevin Dove in a press release. “Smoke detectors are the best way to provide notification of a fire allowing residents to get to a safe location and contact emergency personnel.”
The Fire Department installed 351 smoke alarms and 70 Carbon Monoxide alarms in this year’s first quarter, up by 27.1 percent compared to the same period in 2023 according to Dove’s presentation.
“Statistics show that 60 percent of fatalities are a result of not having working smoke alarms and that is absolutely unacceptable for our Fayetteville residents,” said Dove.
