Homeless Support Center community meeting Sept. 9

The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners will hold a community meeting Sept. 9 from 4 – 5:30 p.m. at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, located at 400 Campbell Ave., Fayetteville, to gather input for the design of the planned Homeless Support Center.
The meeting will provide community members an opportunity to contribute ideas and feedback on the design and services of the upcoming Homeless Support Center. Public input will play a key role in shaping a facility that meets the needs of the community and fosters a supportive environment for people seeking assistance.
“This project has involved nearly every department in Cumberland County and pulled on the expertise of community partners and advocates across the state,” said Glenn Adams, Chairman of the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners, in a press release. “As we move forward, we are excited by the strong support from our partners. We believe collaboration is the key to a successful project.”
The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners broke ground for the planned Homeless Support Center Feb. 19 at the site located at 344 Hawley Lane, beside the FTCC Education Center (former Pauline Jones Elementary School). The County’s intent is for the facility to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and to provide residents with access to programs and resources that will assist in achieving sustainable housing and life enrichment well beyond those of a traditional homeless shelter.
“The Cumberland County Homeless Support Center will change the way we offer services to the homeless population,” said Assistant County Manager for Community Support Heather Skeens in a press release. “This initiative aims to offer essential services through comprehensive and thoughtful assistance based on individual needs.”
The Homeless Support Center will be made possible through partner participation from Fayetteville Technical Community College (FTCC) and Cape Fear Valley Hospital. The Cumberland County Board of Education provided a portion of the property that will be used for the site and the Fayetteville City Council approved a rezoning request and special use permit for the property.
