Embark on a musical journey with Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra as they explore American music, both new and old. This concert features two new works paired with Dvořák’s classic “New World” Symphony. The first new work, TESTIFY!, written by North Carolina composer Brittany J. Green, explores the composer’s connection to her mother, music and the church.
“Mama made the impossible happen every day of the week — Sunday was no exception — and when she plays the tambourine, even to this day, I feel like I’m in a whirlwind of sound and technicolor. For me, it’s a little slice of heaven on Earth. TESTIFY! is inspired by this feeling,” shared Green in a press release.
FSO’s Assistant Conductor Dr. Daniel McCloud will conduct the second ever performance of this vibrant composition. TESTIFY! is presented through the League of American Orchestras’ Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation Orchestral Commissions Program. This national consortium ensures that new works by women will receive multiple performances throughout the country.
The other new work, Fantasy in 4 Moods, was commissioned by the FSO for woodwind multi-instrumentalist Dr. Ronnal Ford. This composition by Chicago-based composer Ahmed Al Abaca showcases Dr. Ford’s skill on many different instruments and in many styles, ranging from Romantic to disco! Al Abaca’s composition invites listeners to be curious, reflective, and resilient throughout the four Moods, each performed on a different instrument by Dr. Ford.
The second half of the program features a well-known symphony by Czech composer Antonin Dvořák. Themes from Symphony no. 9 are used regularly in popular media and the composition is a tribute to American musical traditions.
The Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1956 and is a professional orchestra whose mission is to educate, entertain, and inspire the citizens of Fayetteville, NC, and surrounding counties. The New World: Reimagined is the Symphony's fourth concert in their six-concert series this 2024-2025 season. Learn more at www.fayettevillesymphony.org.
