The Salvation Army announces the immediate closure of the Pathway of hope shelter in downtown Fayetteville

The Salvation Army just announced its Pathway of Hope emergency shelter must close due to a lack of funding.

"We have no funding partners, and we cannot continue to offer shelter without funding," said Major Aaron Goldfarb of The Salvation Army of the Sandhills Region in a press release. "This difficult decision weighs heavily on all of us as we understand the vital role this shelter plays in our community."

According to the 2023 annual report, the Salvation Army of the Sandhills Region’s expenses in 2023 totaled $2,283,741 and its revenue for 2023 totaled $2,307,811. The nonprofit has been operating at a deficit for months, with no hope of new funding for the shelter.

"A nonprofit cannot operate without funding," explained Goldfarb in a press release. "We were open 24 hours a day, providing a haven for those in greatest need. Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this closure, and we're working to connect our clients with alternative resources during this challenging transition."

The Salvation Army has secured housing arrangements for the families who were staying at the shelter and is working with the continuum of care and other partners to help secure shelter for the 26 single men and women who were in the shelter.
