Cumberland County Department of Public Health Director Dr. Jennifer Green has announced she will step down from her role at the end of 2025. Her decision is due to her spouse’s upcoming relocation related to military service with the U.S. Army.

“It has been a pleasure to work for a county and alongside a public health team that is invested in improving the health of our community in innovative ways,” said Dr. Jennifer Green in a press release. “I am committed to supporting the department during this transition.”

The Board of Health, in consultation with the County Manager and the Board of Commissioners, is developing a transition plan to ensure continued leadership and support for the Department of Public Health following Dr. Green’s departure.

“Dr. Green has worked diligently to address important health issues including the COVID-19 pandemic, maternal health and the opioid crisis,” said Board of Health Chair Dr. Kingsley Momodu in a press release. “We are grateful for her leadership and the positive changes she has driven during her tenure.”

Dr. Green has served as Health Director since November 2019. Under her leadership, the department expanded critical services and launched several impactful programs, including the implementation of National Opioid Settlement Funds, Connected Care, Healthy Conversations and doula services to improve maternal health outcomes.

“Dr. Green's visionary leadership has profoundly impacted Cumberland County's public health landscape,” said Board of Commissioners Chairman Kirk deViere in a press release. “From steering our community through the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic to launching transformative initiatives like the Healthy Conversations program and the Recovery Resource Center, her contributions have been both innovative and compassionate. We extend our deepest gratitude for her service and wish her continued success in her future endeavors."

Dr. Green received many accolades during her time working in Cumberland County, including winning the Innovation in Health Care Award at the Greater Fayetteville Business Journal’s 2024 Health Care Heroes Awards.

“Dr. Green has been an exceptional leader, guiding the Department of Public Health with integrity and foresight,” said County Manager Clarence Grier in a press release. “Her commitment to community engagement and innovative solutions has set a high standard for public service. We are immensely thankful for her contributions and wish her all the best in her next chapter."
