SCC completes construction on new North-Kitchin campus connector building; Additional projects take shape

Sampson Community College’s new North-Kitchin campus connector building is now open, providing access to the North Building, Kitchin Hall, the Learning Resource Center (LRC) and the elevator.

Beginning construction in July 2024, the new change was prompted to bring SCC’s facilities up to an enhanced accessibility and sustainability approach to better serve the community. The North-Kitchin Connector includes a new and larger elevator to better serve all existing and future students, ensuring that SCC continues to provide an inclusive environment for everyone. It also features modern study rooms, larger collaboration spaces and an advanced information hub.

“We are thrilled to see the North-Kitchin Connector project come to life,” said President of Sampson Community College Dr. Bill Starling in a press release. “This building will transform the centrality of our campus, becoming a vital link between two of our main buildings. The contemporary design will bring in much-needed natural light, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. We hope that both students and employees will feel comfortable moving out of their offices and classrooms to work and enjoy the new spaces, fostering collaboration and learning in a fresh environment.”

As this project wraps up, additional construction continues on other areas of campus. One Warren Student Center entrance and the Kitchin Hall-Student Success Center entrances are temporarily closed as work begins to repair the remaining campus connector between Warren and Kitchin. Crews are replacing the glass roof of the original connector, which developed multiple cracks after years of weather exposure. The project is expected to be completed by the end of Summer, ahead of the fall 2025 semester.

Construction on the 12,000-square-foot addition to the Activity Center continues as well. This expansion will provide much-needed space for academic classes, student activities and college events, enhancing the college’s ability to support its growing community. The project team is anticipating having the Activity Center ready to serve students for the fall 2025 semester.

The Learning Resource Center has also undergone renovations to enhance students’ learning environment.

Shelley Ryals, LRC Librarian, shared in a press release, “The Learning Resource Center has undergone a transformation! What once was a dated space with limited areas for student engagement is now vibrant and better designed to meet the needs of today’s learners. The new design features a more open layout, modern furniture, and repurposed student areas, offering a comfortable and collaborative environment. With more flexible study zones and upgraded amenities, the updated Learning Resource Center is not just a space—it’s an inspiring hub for creativity and learning, offering a quiet and collaborative space whether you’re working solo or in a group.”
