United Way of NC recognizes city employee with state award

Community Development Specialist Jacqueline "Jackie" Abbott was recently awarded the Spirit of North Carolina Award, an award offered by the United Way of North Carolina to honor organizations and individuals who exemplify the “spirit” of their community.

Each year, city employees have the opportunity to give back to the community by participating in the United Way of Cumberland County’s fundraising campaign. Abbott, who works with the Department of Economic and Community Development, has led this internal effort for the past two years.

Under her leadership, the city of Fayetteville’s campaign experienced an impressive year-over-year growth. City employees raised $49,847.31 in the 2024 campaign. This was a 219% increase over the previous year.

Scott Embry, the Executive Director of the United Way of Cumberland County, presented Abbott with the Spirit of North Carolina Award at the City Council meeting on May 12.

“What truly sets Jackie apart is her ability to lead without authority,” Embry said in a press release. “She brings people together—not by title, but by example. With conviction, compassion, and collaboration, she has elevated not only the campaign’s success but the entire spirit of giving within the city.”

United Way of North Carolina recognized 62 Spirit of North Carolina Award winners for the 2024 year, representing 17 local United Ways in March 2025. Winners had to meet specific standards of achievement and were nominated by their local United Ways. United Way of North Carolina leads the award nomination process and presents the award annually.
