Gray's Creek High School student participates in ECU PIRATE Program

Cumberland County Schools proudly congratulates Charlene Gutierrez, a student from Gray’s Creek High School, for her successful participation in East Carolina University’s (ECU) 2025 PIRATE (Pirate Institute for Regional Aspiring Teachers & Educators) Program.

Held June 18–20 on ECU’s campus in Greenville, N.C., the PIRATE Program is a competitive, three-day residential experience designed to inspire and prepare high school students across North Carolina for careers in education. Gutierrez was among a select group of students from 35 counties statewide who were chosen to engage in this immersive opportunity—complete with campus living, dining and materials provided at no cost.

Throughout the program, the students participated in hands-on workshops, interactive sessions led by ECU faculty and dynamic small group activities that focused on child development, classroom leadership and pedagogy. Students also connected with current ECU education majors, alumni and North Carolina educators, who offered valuable mentorship and insight into the teaching profession.

The participants also explored ECU’s College of Education Community of Scholars and the Education Living and Learning Community, gaining a deeper understanding of academic support resources and student life. Highlights of the experience included an Educator Preparation Program Fair and an interactive panel discussion with seasoned educators on career pathways and leadership in the classroom.

“The PIRATE program provides more than just exposure to teaching—it equips students with the tools, connections and inspiration to envision themselves as future educators,” said Dr. Holly Fales, the assistant dean for ECU Undergraduate Affairs and Educator Preparation in a press release. “It’s a vital step toward building North Carolina’s next generation of passionate, qualified teachers.”
