After careful consideration of nine qualified applicants, the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners unanimously appointed Major Johnathan Morgan as sheriff to complete the unexpired term of Sheriff Ennis Wright.

The Board expressed its heartfelt gratitude to Sheriff Wright for his years of dedicated service to Cumberland County and its citizens. Sheriff Wright retired effective June 30, 2025, after serving as Sheriff since 2017.

The Board publicly opened the application process on July 15, 2025, inviting qualified residents to apply by an Aug. 4 deadline. Requirements included being at least 21 years old, a qualified Cumberland County voter, and possessing a recent no-felony-conviction disclosure.

“Our primary goal throughout this process has been to ensure a smooth transition and continuity of operations within the Sheriff's Office,” said Board of Commissioners Chairman Kirk deViere in a press release. “The Board of Commissioners collectively felt that Major Morgan's experience and understanding of current operations and procedures make him uniquely positioned to maintain the high standards of public safety our citizens expect and deserve. We also thank all nine applicants who stepped forward during this time of transition. Their willingness to serve demonstrates the strength of character and commitment to public service that makes our community exceptional.”

Sheriff Morgan will serve the remainder of the current term, which runs through December 2026.

“I look forward to continuing to work alongside Sheriff Morgan, just as I did with Sheriff Wright,” said County Manager Clarence Grier in a press release. “I am excited for the collaboration ahead as we continue our mission to ensure the safety and well-being of our community.”
