Lumberton Regional Airport breaks ground on major hangar expansion project

On Nov. 13th the Lumberton Regional Airport marked an exciting milestone with a groundbreaking ceremony for a major aviation development project that will enhance the airport’s capacity and support future growth.
The project includes the construction of a 12-unit T-hangar totaling 17,550 square feet and a 2-unit box hangar totaling 12,000 square feet. Once complete, these new facilities will expand aircraft storage capabilities and accommodate increasing demand from general aviation and business operators.
“This expansion represents a significant investment in the future of aviation here in Robeson County,” said Airport Director Gary Lewis in a press release. “We are seeing steady growth in aircraft operations and interest from both private and corporate users. These new hangars will allow us to better serve those needs while continuing to position Lumberton Regional Airport as a key transportation asset for southeastern North Carolina.”
City and county officials, community leaders and aviation partners gathered to celebrate the start of construction. The new hangars are designed to enhance the airport’s infrastructure, improve operational efficiency and attract additional aviation-related businesses to the area.
Lumberton Regional Airport has been steadily modernizing its facilities over the past several years, focusing on infrastructure improvements and long-term development planning.
Construction on the project is expected to begin immediately following the groundbreaking ceremony, with completion anticipated in 2026.
