Cumberland County announces transition plans for public health director position

The Cumberland County Department of Public Health has announced that its Director, Dr. Jennifer Green, will officially step down as a full-time employee on Dec. 19, 2025.

Green announced earlier this year that she would leave the position at the end of 2025 due to her family’s military relocation.

The Board of Health, in consultation with the Cumberland County Manager and the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners, has developed a transition plan to ensure continued leadership and support for the department following Dr. Green’s departure.

Assistant County Manager Heather Skeens will assume the role of Interim Public Health Director at the time of Green’s departure.

Although her last day in the office will be in December, Green will continue to serve the County in a part-time, remote capacity beginning in January 2026. For the following year, she will provide remote ongoing support to the department.

Green has served as public health director since 2019. Under her leadership, the department expanded critical services and launched several impactful programs, including the implementation of National Opioid Settlement Funds, Connected Care, Healthy Conversations, and doula services to improve maternal health outcomes. The Greater Fayetteville Business Journal also honored Green during our 2024 Health Care Heroes awards where she won the award for Innovation in Healthcare.

“Dr. Green’s expertise and leadership have been instrumental in advancing the health and well-being of our residents,” said County Manager Clarence Grier in a press release. “We are grateful she will continue to lend her knowledge and guidance, even as she embarks on this new chapter.”
