FTCC introduces new program preparing students for careers in the underground utility construction industry

Fayetteville Technical Community College is opening the door to high-demand careers in the underground utility construction industry with its new Utility Construction Technician (Underground) program; a hands-on, fast-track pathway to a skilled trade career in just 11 weeks.

The inaugural cohort begins March 2 through May 13, meeting Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at FTCC’s Fayetteville campus. This intensive 306-hour training course offers a combination of classroom instruction and practical field experience.

With infrastructure projects expanding across North Carolina, utility construction technicians are in high demand statewide. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, utility and heavy equipment operators in North Carolina earn an average annual salary of around $52,000, with experienced workers exceeding $70,000 depending on specialization and region.

The program’s goal is simple: help students move from training to a rewarding, stable career in record time. Whether you’re starting fresh or looking to transition into a skilled trade that keeps North Carolina connected and growing, FTCC’s UCT (Underground) program prepares you to succeed in one of the state’s most essential industries.

The registration fee is $180, and qualified North Carolina residents may be eligible for full tuition assistance through the FTCC Forward Scholarship, designed to support students pursuing short-term, high-impact training programs that lead directly to jobs.
