A roundabout is coming to a crossroads in Robeson County to improve safety and mobility.
The N.C. Department of Transportation awarded a $2.5 million contract last week to Barnhill Contracting Co., which will construct the improvement at N.C. 71 and Oxendine School/Red Hill roads west of Red Springs.
The department determined the circular design was warranted after studying this intersection’s crash patterns, traffic volumes and existing design. People can learn the ease of navigating roundabouts by watching these short NCDOT videos.
Roundabouts reduce the risk of serious crashes, and they improve traffic flow by eliminating the stop-and-go nature of an all-way stop, which is why the department in 2023 used federal funds through the Carbon Reduction Program to pay for the majority of this project. This program, part of the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, seeks to reduce congestion and engine idling.
The Rocky Mount-based contractor may proceed with the work in May and will have until the end of this year to complete the project.
