Harnett County has selected former Deputy Director, Kelly Kelly, to serve as the new director of the Department of Social Services (DSS). Kelly was sworn in on Friday, March 13, 2026.
Kelly stated that she is very honored and humbled to be selected as the new director.
“I am honored because I know the work we do truly changes lives. I am humbled by knowing we have a committed group of employees, and I am inspired by the work they do every day. Knowing that our efforts help protect children, support vulnerable adults and strengthen families in our community is very rewarding. Seeing the dedication of our staff and positive outcomes for our citizens motivates me for the future as we continue to assist our community in our day-to-day work,” said Kelly in a press release.
Kelly has worked with the Harnett County Department of Social Services for over 31 years. She began her career with Adult Services in 1994. She eventually worked with Adult Protective Services, residential care homes, became a supervisor for WorkFirst (the County’s childcare subsidy program) and then supervised Adult Services. She then rose to a program manager role before becoming deputy director in 2017. Since Jan. 1, 2026, she has served as interim director following the retirement of former DSS Director Paul Polinski.
Kelly’s new role will oversee all daily operations of the Department of Social Services. She is looking forward to the future and planning how to best support the residents of Harnett County.
“One of my priorities moving forward will be to strengthen collaborations with community partners as our policies and services are always evolving,” said Kelly in a press release. “I believe when agencies, organizations, and community stakeholders work together, we are better able to address complex needs and create stronger outcomes for the individuals and families we serve.”
Kelly attended UNC Greensboro to earn her degree in Social Work. While working with Harnett County, she has continually pursued continuing education through UNC leadership/management courses and completed the Leadership Harnett program in 2005.
