Cumberland County Schools (CCS) joins the greater Cumberland County community in remembering the life and legacy of Chairwoman Judy Musgrave, an at-large member of the Cumberland County Board of Education, a lifelong educator and a devoted public servant who passed away yesterday, June 14, 2026.

“Chairwoman Judy Musgrave was a respected leader, a passionate advocate for students and a woman whose life was rooted in service. She led with grace, strength and a deep belief in the power of education to change lives. We are deeply saddened by her passing, and we are grateful for the lasting mark she leaves on Cumberland County Schools and this community,” shared Jacquelyn Brown, vice chairwoman of the Cumberland County Board of Education in a released statement.

Chairwoman Musgrave’s legacy in education began long before her service on the Board of Education. She retired from CCS in 2012 after a distinguished career as an educator and mathematics curriculum leader, and she continued her service to the district in 2014 when she began serving on the Cumberland County Board of Education. Known for her steady leadership, strong voice for children and deep community involvement, she brought wisdom, compassion and conviction to every role she held.

Throughout her life, Chairwoman Musgrave was recognized for her contributions to education, civic engagement and service, including being honored by the National Alumni Association of Shaw University as a “Living Legend.” Her impact reached across classrooms, boardrooms, churches and community spaces, where she consistently worked to uplift others and open doors of opportunity.

CCS extends its heartfelt condolences to Chairwoman Musgrave’s family, friends, colleagues and all who were touched by her life and leadership. Her service will continue to inspire the district’s work on behalf of every student.

“Cumberland County Schools has lost a dedicated public servant and a true champion for children. Chairwoman Judy Musgrave devoted her life to helping others as an educator, Board member and community leader. Her legacy is one of service, excellence and care, and we will honor her by continuing the important work she cared so deeply about. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and all who loved her,” shared Superintendent of Cumberland County Schools Dr. Eric C. Bracy in a released statement.
