The North Carolina Military Business Center (NCMBC), headquartered at Fayetteville
Technical Community College, is pleased to announce the selection of Thomas “TJ” Gilroy for the position of director of defense technologies.  Mr. Gilroy previously served as an NCMBC regional program manager with a focus on innovation, research and development. In his new position, Mr. Gilroy will lead strategic initiatives that strengthen North Carolina’s defense technology ecosystem and expand opportunities for businesses pursuing Department of War research, development, testing, and acquisition opportunities.

Since joining NCMBC in 2022, Mr. Gilroy has played a key role in connecting North Carolina companies with federal research and development organizations and opportunities, helping businesses navigate both traditional and non-traditional defense acquisition pathways. His work has focused on fostering innovation, accelerating technology transition and supporting companies pursuing opportunities with agencies such as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Air Force Research Laboratory, Army research organizations, the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and others.

“TJ has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership, industry knowledge, and a passion for helping innovative companies succeed in the defense marketplace,” said Scott Dorney, Executive Director in a press release. “His unique combination of military experience, business development expertise and deep understanding of research and development programs makes him the ideal leader to drive our defense technology initiatives forward.”

Mr. Gilroy brings a diverse background to the role. Prior to joining NCMBC, he served as a Marine Corps pilot before transitioning into executive leadership positions within the tactical equipment industry. During his private-sector career, he helped develop products, build and train sales teams, manage government contract proposals and support manufacturers serving military customers through Defense Logistics Agency programs. He also created innovative marketing approaches that connected manufacturers directly with military decision-makers.

As Director of Defense Technologies, Gilroy will focus on expanding NCMBC’s support for emerging and established technology companies, strengthening collaboration among industry, academia and government stakeholders, and increasing participation in defense technology programs. His leadership will help position North Carolina businesses to compete for research and development funding, prototype projects and technology transition opportunities that support national defense priorities.

“North Carolina is home to an extraordinary community of innovators, researchers, and entrepreneurs,” said Gilroy in a press release. “I am honored to take on this role and look forward to helping organizations across the state identify new opportunities, develop transformative technologies and deliver solutions that enhance our nation’s defense capabilities.”

A graduate of the University of Virginia and Naval Flight School, Gilroy has also completed advanced aviation safety training and is a certified Behavioral Consultant for DISC personality assessments. In addition to his professional accomplishments, he is the author of several books focused on leadership, personal development and purpose-driven success.
