State transportation planners are interested in learning the public’s ideas for improving the Ramsey Street corridor.
The N.C. Department of Transportation is currently studying plans to reconstruct a 7-mile section of Ramsey Street from the Martin Luther King Jr. Freeway to Bethune Drive north of Interstate 295 into six lanes with a raised median.

The road currently has three lanes traveling south and two running north, and much of it has an open center turn lane.
The project’s goal is to ease congestion, plan for future growth in traffic volumes and improve safety and bicycle and pedestrian access along this heavily traveled corridor.
People are encouraged to attend a set of workshops next week designed to gather input on what improvements they would like to see for this corridor, which also carries U.S. 401.
Both workshops are from 5-7 p.m., and people may attend either and drop in anytime:
The workshops will function as listening sessions. Participants will review informational boards and take part in guided activities to provide feedback to NCDOT on how best to improve safety and traffic flow along Ramsey Street.
The project was originally proposed by local officials concerned about traffic congestion, and a feasibility study by NCDOT validated those concerns and recommended widening the roadway.
The department is accepting comments for improving the corridor through Oct. 30. There are a variety of ways for people to send comments: email RamseyStreet@publicinput.com; or leave a message by calling 984-205-6615 (enter project code 2502). Alternatively, the public may go to the project webpage to leave comments and see other project details.
NCDOT will provide auxiliary aids and services under the Americans with Disabilities Act for people who wish to participate in this meeting. Anyone requiring special services should email Diane Wilson at ext-pdwilson1@ncdot.gov as early as possible so arrangements can be made.
People who do not speak English, or have a limited ability to read, speak or understand English, may receive interpretive services upon request prior by calling 1-800-481-6494.
