The bridge carrying Elliott Bridge Road over the Lower Little River will be replaced starting in November, improving a key connection at the Cumberland-Harnett county line.
Built in 1961, the bridge is nearing the end of its service life. While it continues to be safely maintained, its aging components require more frequent upkeep. Replacing the structure will improve long-term safety and reliability for drivers.
This bridge serves two secondary route numbers, and its name is spelled slightly differently on each side: Elliott Bridge Road in Harnett County, and Elliot Bridge Road in Cumberland County.
Once the project begins, contractor Smith-Rowe LLC will have one year to demolish the existing bridge and construct a new, two-lane structure built to modern standards. The new bridge will feature wider lanes and shoulders and higher barrier walls to better meet current engineering and safety requirements.
During construction, Elliott Bridge Road will close at the bridge site. Drivers will follow a marked detour using Will Lucas Road, Wire Road, West Reeves Bridge Road, and U.S. 401 (Ramsey Street). Motorists should plan for extra travel time and follow all posted signs.
The N.C. Department of Transportation expects Elliott Bridge Road to reopen by late 2027. The department awarded the $2.8 million contract in October.
