Today, Nov. 5, marked a milestone for the University of North Carolina at Pembroke's new $96 million Clinical Sciences Building as the final structural beam was hoisted into place.

“This beam represents hope, real potential for a better life. Hope that more healthcare professionals will choose to serve this region. Hope that families will have greater access to the care that they need, and hope that the next generation will inherit a healthier, stronger, more vibrant community,” shared UNCP Chancellor Robin Cummings during the ceremony.

The 74,000-square-foot facility will serve as a home to North Carolina's and the UNC System's first public College of Optometric Medicine and will feature advanced clinical training labs, simulation spaces and patient care areas. The building will also house UNCP's Occupational Therapy program and other clinical sciences programs, supporting the university’s continued investment in healthcare education and workforce development across southeastern North Carolina.

Chancellor Cummings connected the building to the university’s “grow your own” approach. Approximately 80% of UNCP’s nursing graduates live and work in southeastern North Carolina, he said, illustrating the value of educating local students for regional needs.

Metcon Construction, Inc. and TA Loving are working to ensure the building's design reflects the culture of UNCP and Pembroke.

“When I founded my company Metcon 26 years ago, right here in Pembroke, I made a decision that I was going to build my company and keep my company headquartered right here at home. I believe then, as I do today, that you shouldn't have to leave this community to find opportunity and build a successful career. And that's exactly what excites me about this project,” shared Metcon Founder Aaron Thomas.

Speakers signed the final beam before it was raised, marking progress on a facility intended to benefit students, patients and employers across southeastern North Carolina.
