Today, Fayetteville Technical Community College hosted a groundbreaking event for the J.P. Riddle Stadium softball field.
The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners gifted the new facility to FTCC in January 2019.
“It’s not about any of us,” said Chairman Glenn Adams. “It’s about the students and for them to be able to go do what they want to do, go to four-year colleges and more.”
The new addition to FTCC will provide a permanent home for the softball team and represents an important step in providing equity to FTCC’s female athletes. The field will be built on just over an acre of land on the 15-acre stadium property located at 2823 Legion Road.
“These young men and women that will be playing here are very fortunate to get to play here,” said Joe Riddle, representative of the Riddle family. “We appreciate what FTCC has done and we can wait to see all this pay off and all these teams do.”
The project is estimated for $1.5 million, and the first phase of construction will include the field, scoreboard and lights. Completion is expected by this summer.
A later phase will include the construction of a new locker room.
