Board of Commissioners receives space needs update and amends County budget

During a special meeting on June 13, the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners received an update for the Cumberland County Comprehensive Space Needs Analysis and Master plan and voted to amend the fiscal year 2023 budget.
The study, completed by Creech & Associates, showed the current and future space needs, and presented multiple options and cost estimates for how the County can address the needs. These findings in the study will be used in the County’s long-term master planning effort.
Some of the options presented include:
- Constructing a new General Government Services Center for the County’s administrative departments.
- Renovating the Historic Courthouse, for either the Board of Commissioners and County Administration or as a County Museum with space for Library Administration.
- Renovating the Board of Elections facility at its current location or building a new site on the General Government Services Center.
- Moving the County’s administrative departments out of the Judge E. Maurice Braswell Cumberland County Courthouse to be used solely by the Court system and potentially adding a sixth floor.
- Relocating Child Support in vacated spaces in the existing Social Services building, constructing a new building on the Human Services campus.

The amendment to the Budget Ordinance involved $12,750 in funding for Action Pathways Second Harvest Food Bank. The Board voted on this after Chairman Glenn Adams, a representative of the Board of Directors for Action Pathways, recused himself during the vote.
