Ruth L. Bush, MD, JD, MPH, FACS has been appointed vice dean for undergraduate medical education at the Methodist University Cape Fear Valley Health School of Medicine, bringing more than two decades of experience in clinical practice, academic medicine and medical education to the school’s leadership team.

A vascular surgeon by training, Bush has held academic leadership positions at Texas A&M University, the University of Houston and the University of Texas Medical Branch. She also helped launch the University of Houston College of Medicine, contributing to the development of a medical education program focused on preparing future physicians and improving community health.

In her new role, Bush will help advance the school’s student-centered curriculum, support faculty recruitment and development, guide accreditation readiness and strengthen continuous improvement efforts across undergraduate medical education.

“We are very excited to have Dr. Bush assume a leadership position with the medical school,” said the SOM’s Founding Dean Hershey Bell, MD, in a press release. “Her clinical background, expertise in medical education and academic leadership, coupled with her experience with LCME accreditation adds valuable knowledge and insight to our excellent leadership team. I look forward to her meeting members of our academic and clinical communities at Methodist University and Cape Fear Valley Health.”

Bush looks forward to contributing to the school’s commitment to educational excellence, innovation and preparing physicians to serve rural and underserved communities.

“Ultimately, I want our success to be measured not only by the physicians we graduate, but by the lives they touch, the communities they strengthen, and the difference they make,” Bush said in a press release.
