Dr. Irene Pittman Aiken, dean of the Howard Dean Graduate School at UNC Pembroke, has been selected for induction into the Eleanor Roosevelt Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi (KDP) – one of the organization's highest and most selective honors.
The Eleanor Roosevelt Chapter recognizes individuals whose long-standing service, leadership and commitment to excellence have significantly advanced the work of Kappa Delta Pi and the education profession. Induction into the chapter is a lifetime distinction reserved for those who exemplify the values and humanitarian spirit of Eleanor Roosevelt herself.
Aiken's induction reflects more than three decades of exceptional service to Kappa Delta Pi and to the field of education. She has served as an officer in UNCP's chapter since its founding in 1994. She has guided the organization as chapter officer for almost 30 years, mentoring countless future teachers along the way. Her professional contributions to society include publications in KDP Record The New Teacher Advocate and the KDP Blog, as well as service as a reviewer for KDP's national scholarly journals and KDP scholarships.
Dr. Diane Prusank, provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs, praised Aiken's induction as a reflection of her influence on educators and students alike.
“Dr. Aiken's selection into the Eleanor Roosevelt Chapter is a testament to her unwavering commitment to educational excellence, leadership and service,” Prusank said in a press release. “For decades, she has elevated the preparation of future educators at UNC Pembroke and embodied the values of scholarship, mentorship and compassion that this honor represents.”
A respected leader in graduate education, Aiken has dedicated her career to strengthening pathways for educators, expanding access to advanced study and preparing graduates to serve communities with professionalism and compassion. Her induction into the Eleanor Roosevelt Chapter reflects these enduring commitments and highlights UNCP's continued impact on the state and region.
Aiken will be formally recognized during KDP's 2026 Founders Day Celebration on March 9, where she and six other honorees will be celebrated for their contributions to the profession.
