Mulligan’s Creamery, owned by married couple Greg and Dawn, is serving up small-batch, premium ice cream in Southern Pines. The golf-themed ice cream shop, located at 439 Capital Drive, Carthage, N.C., has been open for about seven weeks now and has already become a local favorite.
“The community has been super embracing, and that was a big thing. Besides just our passion for golf and ice cream, we wanted to make sure we were a pillar in the community and could give back and give a place for families to come. So we've already held a couple of spirit nights. We're planning a few more over the next few months, and we just love it. We love when we see the families in and enjoying ice cream. And if they happen to be a golfer, that's an extra bonus,” shared Dawn.
Greg and Dawn hired over 30 employees for the shop, many of whom are high schoolers just getting started in their first job. They’re happy to create jobs in the community and to help young people build skills they’ll carry with them for life.
With 32 flavors, vegan options, dairy-free options and no sugar added options, there’s something for everyone at Mulligan’s. The name is even a nod to golf. In golf, a mulligan is a do-over. At the shop, it means you can come back and try another flavor.
Fun golf-themed specialties like The Sandtrap Sundae and The Berry Birdie are hits among customers, along with homemade flavors like Ultimate Oreo and Party Animal. Another popular flavor is Exhausted Parent, which is a bourbon-spiked espresso ice cream swirled with chocolate chunks.
Greg and Dawn are proud that their ice cream is made with about 80% natural food coloring and natural flavors, and as they continue developing recipes, they hope to increase that to 90-95% by the middle of next year.
Mulligan’s is open seven days a week. Their operating hours are 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday; 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; and 12: p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The shop has tables and seating for up to about 30 people. In addition to scoops and sundaes, they also sell milkshakes and ice cream sandwiches made with cookies from a local baker, keeping operations local.
