Fans of On the Border Mexican Grill are expressing their disappointment and shock across social media as the news broke that the Fayetteville location was permanently closing after Friday, May 15.
The Greater Fayetteville Business Journal reached out to the On the Border media team, and a spokesperson for the business shared the following statement:
“After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to close the Fayetteville location permanently…Closing this restaurant will allow us to focus our time and resources on our other locations and the continued success of the brand. We remain committed to On The Border’s success through training, fresh food and an intense focus on hospitality. We are incredibly thankful for the support of our Guests over the years. It has truly been our pleasure to serve this community."
With no buildup or notice from the brand, known for its fajitas, margaritas, and house-made salsa, it was regular diners who helped the news spread.
On May 1, 2026, it was announced that the brand was acquired by Pappas Restaurants Inc., one of the nation's largest family-owned and operated restaurant groups, operating more than 100 locations across the country. The acquisition, which closed in May 2025, brings together two Texas-born brands.
Pappas Restaurants owns other restaurant concepts including Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen, Pappasito's Cantina, Pappas Bros. Steakhouse, Pappas Bar-B-Q, Pappas Burger and Yiayia's Greek Kitchen.
"On The Border has been woven into the fabric of Texas dining for decades, a place where generations of guests have gathered, celebrated and returned for the Tex-Mex they love. Now, it's part of our family," said Pappas Restaurants Chief Marketing Officer Christina Pappas in a press release. "This brand carries a deep heritage and a loyal community that we are proud to welcome to the Pappas family. We're delighted to honor that history with the quality and hospitality that Pappas is known for, while continuing to evolve the brand for loyal guests, both old and new."
The On the Border location at 115 Glensford Drive is now closed and is no longer listed on the company website.
No news has come from Pappas Family Restaurants Inc. about any plans for the now-empty building or long-term plans for the On The Border franchise.
