Cumberland County Schools (CCS) announced the recipients of two distinguished awards that recognize outstanding contributions to the school community. Thomas Wade, the dedicated head custodian at Brentwood Elementary, has been awarded the Extra Mile Award, while Yvonne Smith, a committed parent and volunteer, is the winner of the Committed Community Support Award.

Both awards were presented in a surprise visit to their respective school. The Prize Patrol presented the Extra Mile Award on Friday, Oct. 6 at Brentwood Elementary School and the Committed Community Support Award was presented on Thursday, Oct. 5 at E. Melvin Honeycutt Elementary School.

The Extra Mile Award is presented to employees who demonstrate a sustained high level of performance and inspire others to do their best. Thomas Wade exemplified this dedication through a heartwarming act of compassion. Nominated by Principal Casey Yates, Wade's nomination highlights a remarkable incident on the first day of school when he went 'above and beyond' the call of duty.

A parent, facing the challenge of a flat tire after dropping off her children at Brentwood Elementary School, found a 'guardian angel' in Wade. Without hesitation, he sprang into action, purchased a new tire, and installed it on the parent's car, which ensured that they could continue their day without further disruption. When offered repayment, Wade's selflessness shone through as he declined, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to the Brentwood community. "He goes 'over and above' to ensure the community here at Brentwood is taken care of," said Yates in a press release.

Yvonne Smith, the recipient of the Committed Community Support Award, is a parent whose children attended E. Honeycutt Elementary School through the years. "There are few faces more recognizable than Yvonne Smith at Honeycutt Elementary" said Antonio Valcarcel, a teacher assistant at the school in a press release. "She truly puts her best efforts forth in serving our school and Jack Britt High School, and I don't think she gets enough credit for it. That's why I feel that Yvonne Smith deserves to be recognized."

Smith extends her reach to Jack Britt High where she actively participates in the music program and serves on a parent committee that is responsible for planning events for the graduating Class of 2024. Also, her three-year commitment to the PTA board as Secretary and her current role as Treasurer at Honeycutt Elementary, reflects her tireless dedication to students, their families and the school community.
