Sampson Community College (SCC) celebrated the graduation of six cadets from its Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program on Monday, June 30. The group, enrolled in the college’s day course from January through June, represents the first class to complete North Carolina’s newly expanded 868-hour curriculum—up from the previous 640 hours.

During the ceremony, speakers noted how this cadet class excelled in their training despite the increased demands of the newly implemented curriculum. With 228 additional hours of instruction, the cadets were not only absorbing new material but helping shape how it’s delivered. Their adaptability and feedback played a key role in refining the program.

“All the BLET graduating class have successfully passed their state exam, marking a significant milestone in their journey toward serving and protecting their communities,” said BLET Qualified Assistant Robert Stroud in a press release. “What began as a group of strangers stepping into a rigorous and demanding course has transformed into a brotherhood built on shared struggle, growth and determination. As they now take on the challenges of their new careers, they carry with them not only the skills they’ve learned here at SCC, but the unbreakable bond forged through their experience together.”

The revised curriculum, implemented statewide beginning Jan. 1, 2025, reflects evolving expectations of law enforcement training and includes added instruction by emphasizing communication, crisis de-escalation, wellness and practical exercises.

“I’m incredibly proud to announce a 100% pass rate for our most recent BLET class—a testament to the hard work of our students and the dedication of our instructors,” said BLET Program Director at SCC Anthony Davis in a press release.

Following the ceremony, President of SSC Dr. Bill Starling shared his reflections on the milestone.

“I want to thank Chief Davis and Captain Stroud for their leadership of our academies, along with the dedicated officers who serve as adjunct instructors and generously contribute their time and expertise. We believe that SCC offers one of the most complete Basic Law Enforcement Academy experiences available to aspiring officers. The College congratulates each of these graduates on their exemplary performance at Sampson Community College,” remarked Starling in a press release.

As of June 30, all six graduates have secured employment with local law enforcement agencies.
