Sampson Community College (SCC) is proud to announce the creation of two new Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree programs beginning in Fall 2026: AAS Agriculture Education and AAS Health Sciences. With more transfer agreements currently in the works, the pathways are designed to meet the growing demand for qualified agriculture teachers and healthcare professionals in the workforce.
The AAS Agriculture Education program is designed for students who have a passion for agriculture and a desire to educate the next generation of agricultural leaders. The program provides a strong academic foundation in agriculture while preparing students to transfer to a four-year institution to pursue teacher licensure in agricultural education.
Coursework combines the foundational aspects of agriculture with educational theory, focusing on soil, plant and animal science, as well as classroom theory and management. Upon graduation, students will be eligible to become extension agents, farm management specialists, 4-H specialists, crop service representatives, agri-tourism tour guides, work in agriculture sales, environmental community education or transfer to a university to pursue a teaching license.
Chris Stroud, department chair, Agribusiness & Animal Science at SCC, explained in a press release, “Our goal is to provide students with meaningful educational opportunities that lead directly to successful careers or continued education. Agriculture is the largest industry in North Carolina, and these programs are designed to prepare the next generation of leaders, educators, and industry professionals. By combining hands-on learning, strong partnerships with local employers, and transfer opportunities, we’re creating pathways that allow students to succeed while meeting the workforce needs of our region. We’re excited to see these programs grow and the positive impact they’ll have on our students, our community, and the future of agriculture.”
Similarly, the AAS Health Sciences program is designed to provide students with a strong academic foundation for careers in healthcare. The degree introduces students to various healthcare systems and job pathways, providing opportunities to explore healthcare careers before pursuing a specialized program or entering the workforce.

Coursework provides a strong foundation in general education courses essential for health practice while offering opportunities to earn stackable credentials in relevant healthcare roles. Upon graduation, students will be prepared with a flexible pathway for entry-level employment, career advancement or continued education in healthcare programs at a four-year institution.
Dr. Allie Apperson-Croley, dean of Health Sciences at SCC, shared in a press release, “We’re excited to introduce the Associate in Applied Science in Health Sciences because it creates another pathway for students who are interested in healthcare. Whether a student wants to enter the workforce, continue into a specialized healthcare program, or transfer to a four-year institution, this program provides a strong academic foundation and the flexibility to support a variety of career and educational goals. We’re proud to offer another opportunity that helps students prepare for success while strengthening the healthcare workforce in our community.”
As of July 1, the AAS Health Sciences degree is directly transferable to Appalachian State University if a student wishes to pursue their bachelor’s degree. Likewise, an AAS Agriculture Education is transferable to North Carolina A&T State University and the University of Mount Olive. More articulation agreements are currently in the works for both programs, ensuring a smooth transition from SCC to a four-year institution of choice.
