Construction has begun for a new 7,361 square foot terminal for the Harnett County Regional Jetport.
The previous terminal building which opened in 1981 is now gone following a two-day demolition process that took place in mid- February.
Now, Harnett County has contracted Jackson Builders Inc. based in Goldsboro and The Wilson Group Architects (TWG) based out of Charlotte to construct a new terminal which will expand not only the square footage, but will also reinvent the space and experience for travelers, and be the new home of the Harnett County Economic Development Partnership.
“I'm elated for this next chapter for us. It's a beautiful two story, 7,300 plus square foot building,” said Airport Director Natalie Pusser about the plans. “It will house not only our airport staff, but also economic development. It has a breathtaking observation deck and conference room upstairs that overlooks the air side of the ramp, which is really nice. It's just a new build that will offer a fresh and inviting space for pilots and businessmen and women and community members to enjoy. So, we are excited about what it has to offer.”
The total project cost is currently $5,116,876.50 and the project is expected to be completed in March of 2024.
Jetport staff are keeping things running, moving into a temporary building located right behind the old site on the side of the parking lot.
“We are still fully functioning throughout the day, 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. and then we still offer self-serve or add gas. So really no changes, just a smaller building to temporarily work out of, but we're one big happy family. We were very fortunate to get a school hut donated from our education department instead of using a trailer and it's wonderful, it's worked out perfect,” shared Pusser.
Pusser also shared that other additions include using recently received grant money to expand the airport’s apron which will allow larger jets to land in the area. She also shared leaders are also working on a Master Plan which includes acquiring additional land for future development.
Pusser also noted the huge role airports have in facilitating economic growth stating:
“We believe it's a gateway that nurtures business growth, transportation, tourism, agriculture and leisure activity. So, we're really proud to be a part of that economic growth.”
