Alpek Polyester closing Fayetteville processing facility; 180 workers affected

By Staff Report, posted 10 months ago

Alpek Polyester USA, LLC has announced that it will cease operations at its Cedar Creek facility in Fayetteville, North Carolina, by July 31, 2025.

According to a WARN Notice Report filed through the North Carolina Department of Commerce, the decision to permanently close the facility will impact a total of 180 employees. The facility is non-unionized and no bumping rights apply. The layoffs are also expected to be permanent.

“We regret the business circumstances that have made this decision necessary. We are interested in working with the Employment Security Commission to make available any transition services offered by the ECS,” stated the company in part.

In a press release, the company also stated that the move will save an estimated $20 million by 2026 and the company will relocate its production.

The site, located between two addresses at 3216 and 3200 Cedar Creek Road, was acquired by Alpek in 2001 and has an installed capacity of 170,000 tons of PET resin and approximately 35,000 tons of rPET flake production.

The Mexico- based company has yet to comment on where the production will be resourced to and did not mention whether their corporate offices located in Charlotte and Wilmington will be affected in their downsizing.

This is the second facility closure within the last six months following the closure of

Alpek subsidiary Styropek’s facility in Monaca, Pa. in November of 2024 which affected 140 workers.
