FirstHealth is the second health system in North Carolina to implant the OmniaSecure defibrillation lead, the world’s smallest, catheter-delivered lead to help patients with heart arrhythmias.

Central to this achievement is Pinehurst Medical Clinic cardiologist Joan Maradey, M.D., who implanted the device on Jan. 8, 2026, at Reid Heart Center on the campus of Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst. Maradey provides patient services under agreement with FirstHealth.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Medtronic’s OmniaSecure lead in 2025 after it demonstrated safety and efficacy in patients at risk of SCA (sudden cardiac arrest).

The OmniaSecure defibrillation lead enhances reliability while maintaining a strong safety profile and is indicated for adults and pediatric patients aged 12 and above.

“Offering this advancement is another step forward in our ability to offer world-class treatment for patients with potentially life-threatening heart arrhythmias,” Maradey said in a press release.
