During the week of July 13-17, local high school students gained hands-on emergency preparedness skills and explored careers in public safety during Camp READY, hosted by the Fayetteville Fire Department in partnership with Cumberland County Emergency Services. 

Throughout the week, students learned directly from local first responders and public safety professionals. The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad, Fayetteville Police Department Forensics team, Fayetteville Fire Department hazmat and rescue teams and Cumberland County EMS led demonstrations and hands-on activities. Students practiced emergency medical care, hands-only CPR, bleeding control, hazardous materials response, search and rescue techniques and teamwork. 

“This camp is something we look forward to each year,” said Laura Smith, Fayetteville's Emergency Management Coordinator in a press release. “We bring together students from across the county with diverse backgrounds. Not only are they learning public safety skills and building trust with those agencies, but they are also forming friendships they might not otherwise have. It’s a great experience for the students, as well as the adults who help make it possible.”  

Camp READY helps prepare young people to respond during an emergency while introducing them to the many career opportunities available in fire service, emergency medical services, law enforcement and other public safety fields. 

“Camp READY helps build communication and leadership skills in younger generations,” said Kira Ayre, a junior firefighter and three-time Camp READY participant in a release. “It opens doors, helps you make connections and gives you a chance to learn more about what you may want to do in the future.”
