The City of Fayetteville celebrates the newly renovated courts at Tokay Park during a ribbon-cutting ceremony this morning, Aug. 26. The project replaced the park’s six aging tennis courts with three tennis courts and 10 pickleball courts, giving residents more opportunities to enjoy both sports. 

“Today’s ribbon-cutting represents another investment in parks and recreation spaces our residents will use every day. The six tennis courts that were previously here and reached the end of their useful life, the city now has replaced those courts with three tennis courts and 10 pickleball courts, creating more opportunities for residents to get outside, stay active and enjoy both sports. As pickleball continues to grow in popularity, City Council wanted to ensure that our pickleball players had additional spaces to play while maintaining quality courts for those who were doing it,” shared City Manager Doug Hewett. 

The $744,382 project was made possible through Community Development Block Grant funds. The City’s Economic and Community Development Department partnered with Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks and Recreation to use the available funding to address the condition of the courts and make an important investment in the surrounding neighborhood. 

Community Development Block Grant funds are provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to support projects that benefit low- and moderate-income residents and address community needs.  

The renovation is part of the City’s continued investment in tennis and pickleball facilities across Fayetteville. The City recently opened the Courts at Glenville Lake, which features 11 tennis courts, including a championship court and four pickleball courts. 

These investments are also helping Fayetteville attract competitive sporting events. The City has been selected to co-host the USTA North Carolina Singles State Championships Oct. 1 – 4, 2026. Matches will be played at eight tennis facilities across Cumberland County, including the Courts at Glenville Lake.
