Are your adventures covered? Coverage tips for your RV, ATV and boat

Sponsored Content provided by Taylor Warren - President, Highstreet Warren Insurance Group

Your ATV, RV and boat are built for getting out there. Exploring trails. Seeing new places. Spending more time doing what you enjoy.

Before you head out, make sure you have the right coverage. Many homeowners and auto policies are designed for everyday use. In some cases, coverage may be limited or only apply in certain situations. As such, your ATV, RV or boat may not be covered the way you expect.

That’s why we created this blog as guidance. Use its simple checklist to review your policies and spot easy ways to strengthen your protection.

Start with a quick coverage check

See how well your coverage lines up with the way you use your ATV, RV or boat:

  • Recreational vehicle exclusions. Does your standard policy exclude ATVs and other off-road vehicles, especially while they are in use?
  • Liability limits. Many policies carry liability limits between $100,000 and $300,000. A serious accident involving a boat or ATV can quickly exceed that.
  • Where coverage applies. Protection may only apply while equipment is stored at home, not while it is being used on water, trails or campgrounds.
  • How losses are paid. Some policies pay actual cash value, which subtracts depreciation, while others offer replacement cost coverage.

If you are unsure about any of these details, it’s best to fix gaps before a loss occurs. This blog can better inform you.

Protect your time on the water

Quick check: Does your policy cover liability while you’re on the water?

The cooler’s packed. The conditions are perfect. You expect a great day on the water. Proper coverage helps you stay ready for whatever the day brings.

That’s where boat insurance comes in. It can help you cover:

  • Liability if someone is injured on your boat
  • Damage to the boat from collisions, storms or theft
  • Equipment such as motors or navigation electronics
  • Protection while the boat is being transported or stored

Many marinas will also require proof of liability coverage. Think of boating insurance like the safety vests and flares you carry onboard — protection you hope you never need.

When the road ends, coverage should continue

Quick check: Are you covered when riding your ATV on public trails and off your property?

For many owners, the appeal is simple: ATVs are built for exploring wooded trails, open land and places where the pavement ends. Others rely on them for everyday work, such as moving supplies, hauling feed and checking fences.

Standard auto and homeowners policies usually exclude them once you leave your property. But a dedicated ATV policy helps make sure those uses are covered. It can protect you when the vehicle is:

  • Riding on trails, state land or other off-road areas
  • Being transported to riding locations
  • Used for tasks around property or farmland
  • Involved in an accident, including liability coverage to help you pay for medical bills, property damage and legal costs if you’re responsible

With the right coverage, you can focus on the ride without worrying about what could go wrong.

Coverage for wherever the open road takes you

Quick check: Does your RV policy cover the vehicle and the belongings inside while you travel?

RVs promise freedom — the open road, national parks and the thrill of waking up somewhere new. An RV is more than a vehicle; it is transportation, living space and travel gear all in one.

That combination creates unique risks. RVs carry personal belongings, expensive equipment and often serve as a temporary home while parked at campsites or parks.

Given this, RV insurance works differently from standard auto coverage. Instead, look for a dedicated RV policy that includes protection for the following:

  • Driving liability and collision protection
  • Personal belongings inside the RV
  • Attached equipment such as awnings or satellite systems
  • Vacation liability coverage when the RV is parked and being used as a temporary living space

The right coverage puts distances between you and unnecessary exposure.

Give life’s adventures a bigger safety net

Quick check: Would your current policy limits be enough if a serious accident happened while boating, riding or traveling?

Spending time on the water, the trail or the road often means sharing those experiences with others. That can increase your responsibility.

Personal umbrella insurance adds an extra layer of protection above your existing policies. It steps in if those limits are reached.

Most policies start at about $1 million in additional protection and extend across your home, auto and recreational coverage. Many people find it to be a simple and affordable way to add meaningful protection.
