Broad Street Deli & Market: Two decades of fresh flavors and community spirit

By Stephanie Meador, posted 6 months ago

Located in the heart of downtown Dunn, Broad Street Deli has become a staple for locals and visitors alike. Owner Jamie Adkins, who has steered the deli for over 20 years, built the business on a foundation of fresh ingredients, community engagement and a dash of family tradition.

“I had always said I wanted a little lunchtime spot, just a pipe dream, to be honest with you, and the owner of the building where I am right now and have been for 20 years, approached me when he heard me say that one day, and he said, ‘Jamie, I have a location. It’s going to be a restaurant. It can be yours or it can be somebody else's.’ And so my husband and I sat down and worked up a business plan and through a lot of prayer, blood, sweat and tears, we're still at it 20 years later,” shared Jamie.

Jamie and her husband Jeff opened Broad Street Deli & Market in February of 2005 with the goal of providing residents with a local spot serving fresh, quality food.

“We really wanted something fresh, healthy and unique to the area, something that's not a food chain. We don’t use a fryer. We don’t fry anything. We wanted it to be more of a healthy, fresh option for people, and family friendly. We're very simple in our recipes, but I believe people like that. There's not a lot of added ingredients. There's not a lot of unhealthy things added to the product. You order a salad, we make it when you order,” explained Jamie.

Jamie is passionate about supporting other local businesses. In addition to the deli, the space includes a market selling primarily NC-made items like wine, cookies, chocolates and even her own homemade poppy seed dressing.

“Jamie's poppy seed dressing is part of a recipe from my mom and I took it, tweaked it a little bit, changed it a little bit, and we started serving it on a fruit salad  as a special. Everybody started asking for it on their garden salads, on their chef salads. So we have had it bottled. It is shelf stable and in our retail market,” shared Jamie.

Sustaining a small business for over two decades has been no small feat.

“We have a good following of friends, local folks that eat with us several times a week. Being close to I-95 brings in the travelers too. So we have a nice mix, but it's all thanks to our dedicated staff and our loyal customers that I'm still right here talking to you 20 years later, that and prayer,” remarked Jamie.

Broad Street Deli & Market is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. They’re gearing up for some special holiday events and details regarding those will be shared on their Facebook page
