A new sweet shop has just opened in Lumberton serving cakes, cupcakes, coffee and more to satisfy customers’ cravings. Owned by Jenna Locklear, Cakes So Good Bake Shop located at 412 Chestnut St. in Lumberton.
Prior to opening her brick and mortar shop, Locklear had been operating her business out of her home.
“When I first started baking, I just started baking pies. So I started my small business. At that time, I created a Facebook page for my business, and it grew from that. 95% of my clients are customers that I've met from that page,” shared Locklear.
As her clientele grew, Locklear expanded to catering events and creating custom cakes for weddings, birthdays and other special occasions.
Now Locklear works in her shop with one other employee, and she shared that she expects to hire a couple more employees in the coming months as operations continue.
Some popular menu items include chocolate layer cake, strawberry shortcake, red velvet cake and sweet potato tarts. Everything is baked fresh by Locklear each day.
A grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony was held on May 10. Locklear has benefited from the support of her community throughout her journey to opening. Her business mentor, Justin Blake, was able to be present for the opening which meant a lot to her. Also, she received help from The Thomas Entrepreneurship HUB in Pembroke in forming her business plan. Locklear shared that the outpouring of support from the community since opening has been incredible.
“The first week of business has been a success. It’s everything that I imagined it would be…the outpouring of love has been amazing,” remarked Locklear.
As a first-time business owner, Locklear was inspired to take this leap of faith by her grandmother who had been an avid baker.
“My grandma has been passed away [for nearly] two years, it’ll be [two years] December 31, and this is something that I had to do in honor of her, because that's where I really learned to bake.”
Locklear hopes that her sweet treats provide customers with “a taste of home” that makes them feel nostalgic for the desserts they enjoyed growing up.
Cakes So Good Bake Shop is open Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
