Cumberland County Schools (CCS) proudly recognizes two exceptional individuals for their dedication and impact. CCS Technology Technician William David Starling has been honored with the Extra Mile Award for his outstanding willingness to step in and provide support beyond the scope of his regular responsibilities. Cumberland County Board of Education Vice Chairwoman Judy Musgrave is the recipient of the Committed Community Support Award recognizing her exceptional generosity and dedication to the students of Cumberland County Schools.

Extra Mile Award Recipient William David Starling

The Extra Mile Award honors employees who consistently exceed expectations, demonstrating outstanding performance and inspiring others to strive for excellence.

October's recipient, William David Starling, was selected for his efforts in helping Cape Fear High School's counseling department overcome a challenge with schedule distribution during open house.

Cape Fear High School (CFHS) Counselor Sasha Preddie, who nominated Starling shared the following statements in her nomination form stating: "Not only does he go 'above and beyond' in ensuring all of our technology needs are met, he’s stepped up in ways that are outside of his job description. Our team acknowledges that this was not something he had to do, but it was something he chose to do, and we are so thankful for this instance and all the other ways he goes above and beyond to assist our department and CFHS."

Committed Community Support Award Recipient Judy Musgrave

The Committed Community Support Award honors individuals or groups for their steadfast dedication and generous contributions to the school system.

October's winner, Judy Musgrave, has given back to CCS in various ways, outside of her official role as a Board of Education member. She has donated hundreds of teddy bears and thousands of dollars worth of math manipulatives and materials to support CCS students. The long-time educator has served the district in one capacity or another for more than 40 years.

Board of Education Chairwoman Deanna Jones, who nominated Musgrave, spoke highly of her generosity and contributions stating: "Mrs. Musgrave's kindness has provided comfort and joy to our learners while giving students the essential tools they need for a successful education," said Jones. "Her contributions have made a powerful, lasting impact on our school community and have demonstrated the true spirit of philanthropy."
