Fayetteville State University (FSU) has cemented its reputation as a leader in blending academic rigor with athletic success, thanks to strategic leadership and a commitment to excellence. Under Chancellor Darrell T. Allison’s vision, FSU has seen unparalleled growth in enrollment, academic performance, and infrastructure, alongside significant achievements in athletics.

FSU athletics programs have celebrated 19 CIAA championships during Chancellor Allison’s tenure, exemplifying a rare balance between competitive sports and academic success. The women’s indoor track team has secured four consecutive CIAA titles, while both the men’s and women’s cross-country teams achieved dual CIAA championships under Olympian coach Inez Turner. Notably, these athletic triumphs coincide with some of the highest team GPAs in the division, a testament to FSU's emphasis on developing well-rounded student-athletes.

More than half of FSU's student-athletes maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher, underscoring the university's commitment to their academic and personal growth. The intercollegiate athletics program emphasizes teamwork, leadership, ethics, and discipline, aligning closely with the university’s mission to produce leaders equipped for a dynamic world.

FSU graduates continue to shine on professional stages, illustrating the strength of the university's athletic and academic preparation. Notable alumni include:

  • Joshua Williams, a Kansas City Chiefs cornerback, who has celebrated back-to-back Super Bowl victories.
  • Kion Smith, contributing to the Miami Dolphins' playoff success as an offensive tackle.
  • Darrell “Sky” Armstrong, a 14-year NBA veteran and Dallas Mavericks coach.
  • Bailey Colon Jr., now a top pit crewman for NASCAR’s Joe Gibbs Racing.
  • Kennie Sims, PGA of America’s Senior Director of Impact, advancing diversity and inclusion through PGA REACH.

These individuals reflect FSU’s ability to cultivate talent that thrives in diverse industries, from professional sports to high-level administration.

Beyond academic and athletic achievements, FSU is a powerful economic engine in North Carolina. According to a UNCF study, the university contributes $187.9 million to the state’s economy annually, supporting 1,942 jobs. FSU graduates collectively generate $4 billion in lifetime earnings, reflecting the university's transformative impact on students’ lives and the broader community.

FSU athletics also enhance local quality of life, offering affordable entertainment and fostering a strong sense of community. Through initiatives like the Broncos Athletics Club, the department secures support for scholarships, facilities, and programming, ensuring that nearly 250 student-athletes in 12 varsity sports have access to top-notch resources.

Fayetteville State University’s athletics program exemplifies the "triple win" of academic excellence, athletic prowess, and community enrichment. The Broncos continue to set new benchmarks for what it means to be champions on the field and in the classroom, demonstrating that success in one area strengthens success in others. This enduring legacy not only uplifts the university but also serves as a vital force for economic and social progress in the region.
