Cumberland County road requires lane closures for work on I-295

Drivers should expect delays for the next several months on Camden Road where construction on Interstate 295 has begun.

A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation is building an interchange with a bridge and ramps that will carry Camden Road over I-295 near Farm Circle Road and southwest of Jack Britt High School.

The contractor needs to close one of the two lanes to do construction, such as grading dirt and installing drainage pipes, near the edge of Camden Road. These periodic lane closures will be limited to weekdays from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. They began Monday, Feb. 20 and are expected to be needed through June.

The lane closures will be conducted using automated flaggers with a red and yellow light under the supervision of an on-site operator, who will monitor the congestion. The contractor may not need to close a lane each day.

In addition, the I-295 construction requires large dump trucks and bed scrapers, which scoop up dirt, to be hauled from one side of Camden Road to another. This will necessitate very brief closures of Camden Road in both directions to allow the heavy equipment to cross.

Drivers should slow down, approach this location cautiously and be alert for workers.

Construction on this 5-mile segment, which runs from Camden Road to Raeford Road, is expected to be completed by summer 2026.
