On a journey to spread a little sweetness, entrepreneur and chef Jane Smith has spent the last few years perfecting the art of sweets on the go.
Smith is the owner of Sprinkle Me Pink, a food truck serving prepackaged sweets like cake slices, cheesecake, cookies, lemonade and more to Fayetteville and Fort Bragg.
What began as an adaptive way for her to stay employed during her husband’s military career has turned into a thriving, family-run business.
“I started out downtown Fayetteville. We had a little shop, and it was going really, really good. And then, because my husband is military, we had to shut it down. And then the ball just kept falling after that,” shared Smith. “I was talking to a few of my friends, and they were like, ‘Sometimes in life you have to pivot.’ And so, after I went through that emotional roller coaster, I did just that. And this time, because we are a military family, I need to be a little bit smarter and strategic when I move, So this time, instead of having a brick and mortar, we put it on wheels.”

With a menu featuring items like honey bun cheesecake, pumpkin cookie butter cheesecake (seasonal) and strawberry crunch cake, Sprinkle Me Pink is a labor of love for Smith. She shared that she and her family bake and prepackage everything themselves working from a commercial kitchen located in Hope Mills. She also shared that inspiration for her flavors comes from many places.
“I'm a mood baker, and depending on the mood, whatever I can create at that moment, [is] something that I'm always willing to try out. I just figure it out as I go and put flavors together that are unique. Sometimes, I will reach out to my customer base and they will give me ideas. One lady gave me a whole front and back paper full of different flavors and items to try,” shared Smith.
That adaptability has become one of the primary strengths of the truck which is able to go to neighborhoods, events and, thanks to an agreement with the Army Airforce Exchange Service (AAFES), set up shop on Fort Bragg.
“When we're not doing events, we use that time to go through the neighborhoods, because we also act like the ice cream truck, but the ice cream truck that serves cheesecake and cake and lemonade,” said Smith.
Smith shared that her assistant is constantly looking for new opportunities for the truck, and after establishing a relationship with places like the Womack Army Medical Center, the truck travels all over.
“If you want us to come to your neighborhood, if we can get at least about 15 people in that area, then we'll come that way. We keep it very, very open. Everyone knows they can email us, we have a number you can call, you can reach out to our assistant. We're always very flexible about where we go.”
Above all, Smith shared that her goal is to keep serving up desserts and remain perfectly pink along the way.

“It just brings a feminine energy, it brings joy. I noticed something, when my truck used to be white, we had good energy. We've always had good energy with our customers, but for some reason now it's like they light up,” shared Smith. “I just want to say how grateful I am for the community, even with all of the changes and then being a part of the journey with us. It's easy to start a business, but a lot of people don't see much success, so they let it go. It's a really good feeling when you’ve got a community behind you that sees the good that you're putting in a community. I call them sprinkles, a lot of my sprinkles stay by my side.”
