Fayetteville’s FAST changes service routes effective July 7

By Staff Report, posted 10 months ago

The Fayetteville Area System of Transit (FAST) will have several service changes beginning Monday, July 7, designed to enhance service frequency, travel times and expand rider access.

These route changes are informed by the recently completed Fare and Service Equity Analysis, conducted in 2024 and approved by City Council in April to ensure transit access is both equitable and inclusive. The comprehensive study evaluated fixed-route and paratransit usage, fare payment methods, rider demographics and access to technology. Feedback from riders emphasized the need for increased frequency and better route connectivity.

Route Changes starting on July 7:

  • Routes 3, 4, 5, 12 and 14 will each gain a second bus during weekdays, enabling 30-minute frequency. Route 14 will benefit from this increased frequency on Saturdays.
  • Route 10 will no longer serve West Regional Library. Instead, it will operate along Fisher Road and Bingham Drive.
  • Route 11 will discontinue service to Country Club Drive and Ramsey Street. It will travel along Murchison Road, Langdon Street, Seabrook Road and Jasper Street, offering a more direct connection between the Fayetteville State University area and Cross Creek Mall, while reducing the overall route time from 1.5 hours to 1 hour. Routes 4, 5 and 9 will continue to service to Country Club Drive and Ramsey Street areas.
  • Route 17 will no longer serve Cross Creek Mall and will instead operate its current mid-day schedule throughout the entire day. Timepoints have been adjusted to coordinate with Routes 18 and 19, maintaining passenger access to the mall through convenient transfers. The route will now run on an hourly schedule all day.
  • Route 19 will serve Santa Fe Drive and Amazon on outbound trips.

Riders who use FAST’s Paratransit Service, FASTTrac! are encouraged to contact FASTTrac! reservations at 910-433-1332 to determine if the upcoming service changes will affect their trips.

“These improvements are a direct result of listening to our riders and studying how to better serve our community,” FAST Transit Director Tyffany Neal said in a press release. “We’re working to ensure FAST evolves from a system of need to a system of choice.”

The Fare and Service Equity Analysis also laid the groundwork for a three-phase transition to a cashless fare system by 2028, beginning with smart cards, mobile payment options and ticket kiosks in 2026.
